Devil's Food Cake (from scratch):
9 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder (amount varies with serving size)
1 1/2 cups of cake flour
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1 teaspoon of baking soda
1/4 teaspoon of baking powder
4 ounces / 1 stick of butter
1 1/2 sugar
2 large eggs
1/2 water / or strong coffee
1/2 cup whole or low fat milk (optional)
1. Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees
2. sift (mix, separately in the same bowl, before mixing together at once) the cocoa powder, cake flour, salt, baking soda, and baking powder in a bowl.
3. Beat (with spoon, or electric mixer) the butter and sugar until smooth and creamy. Then add the eggs.
4. Mix the water or coffee with the milk (optional); then mix with the rest of the batter.
5. Add the butter, sugar, and eggs to the rest of the batter
6. Put butter in your cake pans, or non-stick cooking spray
7. Pour the batter into your pan / pans
8. Put in the oven

4. Add 1/3 a cup of oil
5. Pre-heat the oven to 325 degrees
6. Mix on medium for 3 minutes, high for 4, and low for 1 (electric). Mix until smooth (by hand)
7. Put oil, butter, or non-stick spray on your pan / pans
8. Pour into the pan / pans and place into the oven. Time may vary depending on size of the pan; check the back of the cake mix box for exact times.
